We are Pennsylvania's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Philadelphia raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Philadelphia pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
- If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
- Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
- When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation
Philadelphia Raccoon Control Tip: Information about Raccoons, Their Biology, Life Cycle, and Behavior
If you live in a rural or suburban area, you likely have raccoons to travel around your neighborhood. They get into your garbage, eat your vegetables and fruits in your garden, and generally become a nuisance in a neighborhood. They are cute but quite mischievous. As you watch one, you may be looking to find out a little more information about a raccoon.
How Does a Raccoon Look?
This is one of the most distinguishable animals you will find. Raccoons have a big bushy tail that is ringed with different color fur. They have black fur around their eyes that makes it look like they're wearing a mask. The fur on their body is quite bushy and is gray, brownish, and black in appearance. They have short little stocky legs, and a beady little nose. Once you have seen a raccoon, you never forget how it looks.
Life Cycle
Raccoons live a solitary life for the most part. These are lone wolf animals, but do have a loose social group. A few males may live in close proximity to one another, and they will not only protect one another, but work as a group to find females for reproduction.

Some raccoons hibernate during the winter. This is not true of all species. Others may just have a reduced level of activity during the wintertime coupled with an increased amount of sleep. Most of these live in cold-weather areas where food is scarce or during the wintertime, so the raccoon slows down its metabolism by being less active.
Diet
The diet of a raccoon is pretty open. These animals are true omnivores, meaning that they will eat just about anything they find. This includes such things as bugs, insects, and small animals. They will eat the eggs of birds, amphibians, and reptiles, and will rummage through a garden if it is available to them. Not surprisingly, these animals will eat just about anything out of a garbage can. Something that would make you sick is an incredible delicacy to a raccoon.
Reproduction
Raccoons mate late in the winter or early in the spring. The gestation period for a raccoon is about 63 days, or nine weeks. At this time, a raccoon can have anywhere from one to eight babies in its litter. The babies live with the mother inside a den, which is usually located at the case of a tree cavity.
The newborn raccoon ways a little less than 3 ounces. It has some hair, but not very much. The eyes are closed at birth, and do not open for about three weeks. The babies will be fed by the female for anywhere from eight to 12 weeks before the winning process commences.
The offspring could stay with the mother for as long as a year. They usually leave when they are preparing to breed themselves. A raccoon can live as long as 17 years old.
